Gerontological Nursing Course

Summary

Focus:
  • 2 credit hour course
  • emonstrate basic understanding of gerontological nursing

  • Recognize one's own and others' attitudes, values, and expectations about aging and their impact on older adults and families.
  • Incorporate valid and reliable tools to assess the functional, physical, cognitive, psychological, social, and spiritual status of older adults.
  • Assess older adults' living environment in relation to community resources

  • Recognize and manage geriatric syndromes common to older adults.
  • Appreciate the influence of payer systems related to older adults.
  • Compare and contrast supportive living arrangements as they relate to function and independence of older adults and on their families.
Brief Description: Student…
  • Weekly reflective journal writing - turned in at end of quarter in an organized packet with a summary reflective writing on top - changes in attitudes, values, beliefs, knowledge about aging and older adults over the course of the quarter.
  • Alternative: on last day, have students' complete written survey of these changes.
  • Take home midterm exam (Groups-multiple choice w/short answer rationale)

Community Health Nursing Practicum & Seminar

Summary

Focus: An example of how to integrate gerontology into an existing nursing course.

  • Gain practical skills in assessing internal & external environments and individual & families for health concerns

  • Gain practical experience in planning, implementing & evaluating a teaching/ intervention project.
Brief Description: Community Health Nursing Practicum is a 6 credit class which includes a 4-hour weekly seminar addressing nursing strategies for community as a client. The course is divided into 5 population-based sections (taught by different faculty) of 7-10 students who are assigned to a community setting based on their interests, including elder care. All seminar groups share the same syllabus and assignments; though assignments are adapted according to population focus. Emphasis is on practicing interdisciplinary health care, advocacy, collaboration in partnership with the community in order to promote health and prevent illness, disability and disease.
Clinical Site: A variety of community-based settings.
Location in Curriculum/Type of Course: The course described is part of the RN-BSN curriculum and consists of a 60 hour clinical practicum in a community setting of which 40 hours are precepted by an RN. Completion of assessment in Family Nursing class is a prerequisite.
